How Hard Should It Be To Change Your Constitution

Ever since the Dobbs decision, states have been trying to get onto their books which side of abortion they are on. In Ohio, the Republicans there passed a very restrictive set of laws– no abortions after 6 weeks. There was a ballot initiative to change the constitution to enshrine abortion, and the GOP in that state tried to change the process to make it 60% instead of a bare majority.

Who would have thought that a bare majority could change a state constitution? That seems really dangerous to me– it’s surprising that it hasn’t been done more, actually. I would have thought a higher threshold, or maybe making sure to poll all the residents instead of just the ones that come to the polling place would be appropriate.

In any case, there’s an argument that they should have fixed this a long time before, and I would agree with that. There’s no reason that the change couldn’t have happened a long time ago. I’d also add that the other side of this argument could have passed their change to the constitution to protect abortion rights a long time ago as well, as many other states passed restrictions in the event that Roe v Wade was overturned.

In any case, the abortionists defeated the change, and it is yet to be seen what they’ll do in October.
