From the Strange Marriages File

Deven Traboscia

We’ve previously covered the woman that auctioned herself along with her Ferrari and the girl that flew to the Middle East to marry a man she met on MySpace.

This newest entry of strange marriage arrangements comes from Florida, where a woman is selling her house—and herself—on eBay and Craigslist:

A struggling single mother and real estate agent is trying to sell her Florida home and find a husband at the same time. She’s auctioning off both her home and her love in a package deal on eBay and Craigslist.

Her eBay auction ends July 2 and asks for a starting bid of 99 cents with a shipping cost of $500 thousand.

The divorced mom of two teenagers is certainly modeling marriage to her daughters:

  • By staging this stunt she’s telling her daughters that it doesn’t really matter whom you marry.
  • By divorcing her children’s father, she’s told them that marriage isn’t for a lifetime.
  • And by packaging herself with her house, she’s told them they are just another commodity.

Certainly things that I won’t be teaching my daughter…

  1. @Thrifty Karen: I think more instances show up as the latter, rather than the former. MySpace is a breeding ground for predators (or at least it has that reputation).

  2. Hmm. You’d think that all the rabid defenders of marriage would be clamouring for a federal amendment against this serious threat to the sanctity of marriage.

  3. @Musicguy: You make an excellent point. Marriage was in a lot of trouble before “same sex marriage”. I would track it back to the arrival of “no-fault” divorce.

But just like many things, I don’t think that an Amendment to the Constitution is the way to go. Hearts have to change, not be forced. If I were to prescribe something to “fix” marriage, I would change it more into a contract between people, one that actually puts some teeth to “to death do us part”– like the covenant marriages I read about in some states.

  4. Unbelievable, I wonder how this story turned out.

Re comments, very good point that problems with marriage began with no-fault divorces. I hope if I pass along anything worthwhile to my kids besides faith in God, it will be that marriage is serious stuff. Guard your hearts single people! Be so close to God that you don’t let your feelings over-ride your good judgment. I’m surrounded by people in horrible marriages. I’m so thankful for my kind, generous, sensitive hubby, but they’re hard to find. It’s better to be single than in a bad marriage. And marriage is for keeps!!!

Marys last blog post..Dressers in the Kitchen

  5. @Mary: I kept trying to find the actual auction, but it’s hard to find things like this on eBay. All the original articles I was seeing didn’t seem to link to the auction either. (Actually, this is probably a good thing, and yet it’s hard to find the conclusion to the story!)

As far as marriage, you’re right. But it’s more complicated than just finding the right one. You have to partner that with “saving your best glue” for that marriage. That includes keeping physically and emotionally pure before marriage. If you’ve “practiced” divorcing you’re more likely to divorce. 🙁
