Bill Frist and Embryonic Stem Cell Research

So, the Majority leader speaks again, and this time on Embryonic Stem cell research. Cal Thomas has an article and so does the National Review Online. Both of them talk about how confusing and ridiculous his logic is on this one.

First off, what grounds does he have to make any kind of statement as to regards to 10 rules for ESR to be carried out? He contradicts himself in these 10 by saying the parents should decide whether the embryos would be used, but parents implies children. He says he prolife from conception, but here he’s saying
that these children can be killed.

NRO goes further in saying that the prolifers have to get on the offensive. They’re too willing to not let something go further rather than jumping into the frey and winning back ground. NRO wanted amendments to the ESR bill that they are voting on that would disallow cloning, or do something– sink bills just like the Dems do.

To close off, here’s the statement from NRO that I think you need to let sink in: “If the Frists of the world do not find their moral bearings and pro-lifers do not adjust their strategy, there will be no limit to the horrors we will countenance in the name of science.”

Thomas concludes with this analogy:

Consider a portion of the plot summary (Sparknotes.com): “The novel opens in the Central London Hatching and Conditioning Centre, where the Director of the Hatchery and one of his assistants … are giving a tour
to a group of boys. The boys learn about the Bokanovsky and Podsnap Processes that allow the Hatchery to produce thousands of nearly identical human embryos.

“During the gestation period the embryos travel in bottles along a conveyor belt through a factory like building, and are conditioned to belong to one of five castes: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, or Epsilon. The Alpha embryos are destined to become the leaders and thinkers of the World State. Each of the succeeding castes is conditioned to be slightly less physically and intellectually impressive. The Epsilons, stunted and stupefied by
oxygen deprivation and chemical treatments, are destined to perform menial labor.”

Coming soon.
