Valuing the Life of a Child

christina_aguilera_jess_2_big Yet another bit of celebrity news. Within the past few weeks, Christina Aguilera posed for the cover of Marie Claire showing her pregnant belly– and only wearing a jacket.

What I like about what she has to say is that she realizes that it’s a baby– just like we’ve said before.

“There are so many things that could go wrong — somebody could slip, somebody could fall, I could fall,” says Aguilera, who wore a heart monitor during performances. “There was no way … I was going to jeopardize my baby for my show.”

She confirmed her pregnancy earlier this month in the U.K. edition of Glamour magazine.

Aguilera says she kept the baby news quiet for her fans’ sake.

“I didn’t want to make the audience uncomfortable, like, `Pregnant lady onstage! Is she going to be OK?’ But I had to announce it to my band and my dancers, because I wanted to make sure they had my back,” she says.

She adds: “Because I hadn’t said anything, people thought I was trying to keep it this big, bad secret, and that’s not the case at all. I just wasn’t commenting. I’m not being like, `Hey everybody, I’m pregnant!’ I’m not that girl.”

Interesting on how both the news organization and the expectant mother didn’t talk about a fetus– but a baby.

  1. Celebrities also refer to their pet poodles as babies most of the time. The name baby just shows emotional attachment not the actual state of being.

  2. You’ll have to back that one up, Loc. I’ve never heard of someone saying “I didn’t tell my dancers I was adopting a dog because I didn’t want them to yell Dog Owner on stage” or Celebrities taking a two way radio on stage so that they could hear that their dog was all right because they were afraid that someone was going to mishandle them while they were on-stage.

In this case, this celebrity knows the difference between a baby and a dog.

  3. A celebrity flying her dog privately and first class, because she’s not sure who would feed him what otherwise.

Just replace dogs with kids in this article and you’ll see a breakup fight over who has to take the kids.

I could get more, but these seem enough to get the message across.

Also her worrying about telling people she was pregnant had nothing to do with the baby, but instead concern for her health. Having a child releases many hormones in a woman’s body, and raises a potential health risk. When she announces that she is pregnant, all her fans start to worry something bad might happen to her, and so she tried putting off telling them.

  4. Good links– I heard the other day that there was some place that was actually going to have a hotel set up for dogs, and you’d be able to watch them on a webcam. The line between animal and human is certainly blurring more and more.

These links are good at proving that some celebrities have blurred the line (and in the case of Britney she may take better care of her dogs), but it doesn’t prove anything about Ms. Aguilera, nor does it prove that she’s more concerned about her body during pregnancy or the baby. Her quote in the article makes you think she is more concerned about the baby.
