5 Ways The Church is Good for Society

There is a big push today to eliminate God from our country– or at least the public recognition of God and His Word.  We’ve seen an atheist try to have the Pledge of Allegiance declared unconstitutional, Ten Commandments memorabilia taken from public sites and paintings of Christ taken from schools.

This being the case, they are forgetting that the Church– if teaching the Bible– is good for society.

1. Jesus taught that His followers would exercise the “fruit of the Spirit”

Galatians 5:22-23 states:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

What society does not want people who exhibit these traits?

2. Christ’s commands were to his followers.

It is well known that Christians believe that we are all born into sin– that there is none that is righteous and does all things the way God designed.  In short, it is only a free gift that Christian’s accept that changes them from being headed for eternal punishment to eternal glory.  The shedding of Christ’s blood on the cross as a payment for that sin.

Reading the teachings for Jesus and the Apostles it becomes quite obvious that Christians are not to expect non-Christians to behave like them.  While following God’s law and obeying His commands pleases God and should be our desire for everyone, it is well known that without salvation people will be prone to worship politicians, celebrities, sticks, rocks, you name it.

So, Christianity (regardless of what its current standard-bearers proclaim) has always been about changing people– God changing them from the inside out starting with their heart.  Christ’s kingdom (He declares in the New Testament) is not of this world, but of another.

3. Christianity is about the heart.

As believers, we are supposed to be about gaining a passion to become more like Christ.  We are supposed to be seeking to be more like Him every day.  This includes ministering to the poor and needy like He did.  In includes self-sacrifice, helping the least, and realizing that we are sinners saved by grace.

What society would not be benefited by people who went out of their way to minister to the down trodden?

4. A Christian realizes that there is life after this world.

Because a Christian will stand in judgement for what he did– whether it was for God or for flesh– he has an incentive to do all things for Heavenly approval.  This means that what he does here counts toward rewards.  What does the non-believer or the believer in another system have to look forward to?  Coming back as a cow? 75 virgins (perpetual?)? Nothingness?  How does this motivate them to aid society?

5. Because Christians have the belief that God ordained government, they believe government should be obeyed.

Romans 13 is really clear on this.  God says that He sets up heads of state (regardless of whether they are Kings or Presidents) and that the people He sets up are for our good and a protector of those who do right things.  Since God is in control, a believer need only to trust God to do the right thing and obey God’s Word.  This should make them obedient to the administrative laws even if they disagree.

Can you think of others?
