A Free Garage Sale

Bible Baptist Church in Bonner Springs, Kansas, has an idea that I think my church should try—it’s a free garage sale:

Members of the Bible Baptist Church of Bonner Springs, 426 Emerson Ave., began the program they call “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” last year. They collected donations over several months and then opened their doors to anyone who needed the items, no questions asked, in a free garage sale of sorts. Pastor Ed Fuller says as they gear up to have the event again this year from 8:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 6, they hope to spread the word to both gather more donations and help many more.  [Church ministers through free garage sales]

I like the idea—it meets both the spiritual and the physical needs and shows that the church cares for more than just adding people to the church.

One pastor I’ve talked to said that it was difficult to actually get people to take things, that some wanted to pay—and I think it’d be appropriate to say that you could give a donation to the church, but that everything there is free.

Have you ever been to one of these types of ministries?  How has it worked out?
