After a battle with stomach cancer, reports came in that Toby Keith had left this life, and entered the next. I have no idea of his personal beliefs or thoughts about God, but, like most country stars, he mentioned God in his songs, if not always in a good way.
In one of his more famous songs, Beer For My Horses, Keith sings that he will send bad guys to God who will definitely judge them and “send them down.” Fortunately, God is both just and merciful, and I pray that Toby saw that mercy at the end!
His songs were often patriotic, especially after 9/11 when everyone was in the midst of patriotic fervor. He built up the US military might, sung about how the Statue of Liberty was even against the terrorists, and did much to support the troops.
Before that, he sang what was probably the most self-absorbed, rap-like song with a video that I wouldn’t show to kids song, wanting to talk all about himself!
In either case, the time has passed for him to make his decision– and at 62, it’s a reminder that life is short. Whom will you life your life for?
