Three weeks.
It’s been three weeks since Rep. Gaetz pulled the plug on the Speakership of Kevin McCarthy because he failed to keep his promises.
I’m not here to discuss that, but the insane way that the GOP is going about selecting someone to try to get to the magic 217 votes that will stop this insanity from continuing. You see, every time they get a nominee, they come to the floor and lose– making the choice of Jefferies or Pelosi sound preferable.
And why? Why do they keep losing on the floor?
One block wants to get someone conservative, and the other group doesn’t want to reward the group that pulled the plug.
Now, maybe they’ve finally found someone that can win. Rep. Johnson (pictured) seems to be someone that both sides should be able to get behind:
So Johnson ends up being an incredibly likable guy in the House among Republicans, with none of the baggage of being a tight member of McCarthy’s inner circle or being with the “extreme” HFC. It works to his advantage and it appears to be working toward the advantage of the House.
There Is an Eerie Calm in the House Ahead of Today’s Speaker Vote
Or maybe Kevin McCarthy makes a comeback, but it all would have been better if they’d just follow a simple formula.
- They should take all the available names in the House and add a few that have been thrown around (Trump, Zeldin, etc.)
- Have every GOP representative select on a paper or digitally whether or not that individual would vote for the person should they make it to the house floor.
- Now you can have your majority vote only among people that received at least 217 votes from #2.
If no one gets to 217 in point 2, everyone needs to vote for Pelosi to watch the Dems heads explode, then they should all resign.
I hope that Johnson wins so the nonsense stops, but if not, please contact your representatives and propose the MInTheGap plan as the only logical path forward.
