Talk about a strange thing to read about in the news this Saturday morning. The AP is reporting that an aunt of Presidential candidate Sen. Barak Obama is in the national illegally, having been asked to leave some time ago:
Barack Obama’s aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.
Now, let’s be realistic to some degree. I have many aunts and uncles, and I know that they’re all national born citizens. However, on one side of my family I have no clue what their status is. There as at least one uncle that lives out of state, and I know that I haven’t heard the status of most of my cousins.
However, I’ve never written in a best selling novel about a specific relative, and I’m not running for high political office. Nor do I have tons of staff that could at least do a check to see where all my family was an what they were up to.
How much burden should Sen. Obama bear because of this? Well, to one respect each person is responsible for themselves—regardless of whether you’re the candidate that believes that government should be responsible or not. So, I don’t see him taking much heat for this…
Except, illegal immigration is a big deal in this county, and there may be some that look at this case and realize that Sen. Obama—with millions in the bank—couldn’t check on someone mentioned in his book, that has been here four years illegally. He should talk about a “path to citizenship” or something because this issue directly impacts his family.
It’s not enough to just claim he didn’t know her status. This is a guy who would be President, with all sorts of staffers at his disposal. If he wanted to know, he could have found out.
