The GOP, Bob Barr and Conservatism

DaybyDay-05-16-2008

Not that this comic is always G-rated, but it is one of the few popular conservative comics, and I had to post this one because of the Princess Bride reference, and that I think it hits the nail pretty much on the head.

It seems to me that we have many in the Republican party that want the popularity of Reagan1, so they do their best at branding the policy positions they hold as conservative in hopes of getting conservatives to vote for them.  This happened all through out the Republican primary and is even happening with the presumptive nominee– John McCain.

As a registered conservative, however, I’m beginning to think that our name is a problem.  I don’t want to conserve anything that happened in the 90s (or not many of the things) but would rather go back to a Constitutional type government.  Is this space already occupied by the Constitution party or the Libertarians?

In any case…  I’m with many others that say that there is little difference between the parties.  Some say that this is a good thing.  I say it’s the direct outcome of democracy– we don’t necessarily get the best leader, we get the compromise leader.  This has its good and bad points.  But more on that later.

  1. And who wouldn’t, considering his landslide win in 1983 []
