Are Americans “Surrounded by Paganism?”

cross header

It’s no secret that the United States was founded by a people that were based on the Christian faith—in one degree or another.  The people were a religious people.  Our First President stated that a country without a moral framework could not survive.

However, it was the sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln, that stated what would happen if we weren’t careful about our education system.  Our President commented that what was taught in our schools today would be that which ran our country in the next generation.

Beginning in the early 1900s, the government of the United States sought to separate their children from the foundation of the morality of the country—by taking Christianity out of the schools.  Prayer, and then Bible reading were erased from the public sphere as Secular Humanism (a brand of paganism) took its place.

And it continues to this day, as Christian parents continue to send their children to public schools where they are taught things that are opposed to faith and morality, and then wonder why they stop attending church once they’ve left the home.

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting the same result.  So many Christian parents are (by this definition) insane.

So, it shouldn’t surprise us when Newt Gingrich gets up and makes the following statement:

GINGRICH: I am not a citizen of the world. I am a citizen of the United States because only in the United States does citizenship start with our creator. […] I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history. We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism.

Gingrich is exactly right—we need to think of ourselves and our liberties as coming from our Creator.  It’s written right there in the Declaration of Independence.

If you’re still baffled as to why there seem to be two Americas present today, two ideologies vying for control of this nation, two sets of people that cannot simply agree to disagree, it is because there are two different worldviews at war here.  You don’t have to go overseas to see a religious battle, there’s one happening on our own soil.

Pitted against each other is a Christian moral framework by which this country was founded and upon which our liberty is based versus a secular humanistic culture that seeks to force us to be “the best we can be” by controlling every aspect of our lives and eliminating our differences except where they will tolerate them.

Depending on which worldview you have determines how you translate everything you see around you—from nature to politics and everything in between.  The part that’s frightening is that the group on the rise is the group that is intolerance dressed up as tolerance.

And that is something to be concerned about.

  1. The difference, from what little I know, is that the principles and ideals grounded in faith don’t change. But secular principles keep morphing with the times. And it keeps getting ok to do more and more bad stuff as the line between right and wrong gets blurred by modernity and bad examples set by leaders.

If you’re grounded in faith, the line stays where it is, no matter what else changes. And I’d rather be called a square and hold on to an absolute truth, than be hip and politically correct – but end up doing the wrong thing.

  2. Ling is exactly right. With the exception of more liberal interpretations of the Bible (I’m specifically referring to the pastors that Newsweek sought out to proclaim that gay marriage – not just homosexuality but marriage itself – is condoned in the Bible), the standards set by the Bible and those who put their faith in it as God’s Word do not change. It’s those who want to constantly rewrite morality based on what feels good or what (in their minds) is fair. My question is how will we have true justice in the courts if this trend keeps going on? If everything and anything is permissible because of a society shift and a change of feelings, what will we base our legal standards on?

  3. Exactly the point, ladies. Which is also one of the reasons that this latest appointment to the Supreme Court’s comments about a female latina doing a better job on the court than a white male is concerning.

To say that there are no absolutes, no truth, no standards means that anything can be the standard.

We do have a great court system because it’s founded on the rule of law, but as that law changes… well, look at some of the stuff that goes on in family court where the standards aren’t as clear.
