Miss California goes to Fox News

Prejean on Fox News

The story just continues to get stranger, doesn’t it?

The Miss USA pageants always do something to keep themselves in the news, and this year was no different.  But it wasn’t a girl that couldn’t get her geography right, or the overall winner making the news, it was the answer that one contestant—who was a runner up—gave to a politically loaded question that started it, and then photos that were revealed of her that kept her in the news.  Ultimately she did get to keep her title, but not without a lot of handwringing and the head of the Miss California competition resigning.

Why is She Still in the News?

It’s no secret that television news networks like to find attractive women to read the news.  Fox News has a lot of blond Anchorettes that they feature prominently, so it should come as no surprise that if a beauty queen is gaining a lot of attention by the right for taking a political stand that Fox News would want to make her an offer—for just the day they say.

But it still seems pretty slimy if you ask me.

I mean, let’s face it, it doesn’t take much talent to read from a teleprompter—no offense meant, Mr. President—and people do like looking at attractive people.  So, she gets a chance to see how she’ll play.  Fox News is both news as well as a for-profit company, and it may work out.

Is She Really Who We Want Our Girls to Look Up To?

capt3616272cf90b4ff1b25f513256fdba0cmiss_california_nyr203 The problem with her whole story—of going from a no one to a household name and on the premier cable news channel—is that it portrays a very weird message to our young girls.  It tells them that there is glamour to getting breast implants, spending your life hoping to model lingerie and you can add God into the mix without any kind of contradiction—just say that you’re still a work in progress.

This is a problem for me.  I want to defend her for her stance, and praise her for stating what I believe is the right answer under pressure, but for me it’s like a baseball player praising God when we find that he was doing steroids.

But Aren’t We All Sinners?

It’s true, we’re not all perfect, and we’re not all doing the things that we should.  We all fall from time to time, and we all would like to be more like Christ.

The difference here is that Miss Prejean’s life has been centered around her body, her figure, and trying to make a living off of it.  She got to the point she did by doing things and behaving like the world.

What is the difference between modeling lingerie and walking in a bikini on stage, and why would a Christian woman do that?  In what way did she think she was glorifying God by offering up her body for display?

And where were her parents and her church in this process?

I don’t have a problem accepting that we all fall short, we all have a long way to go, etc.  What I do have a problem with is willfully choosing a path that we know goes against the faith and then excusing it later on as “I’m just growing.”  To me that says that you knew it was wrong in the first place.

  1. I’ll agree with you on the contradiction between what she said and where she said it, but I’d like to add a caveat – She’s young. When you’re that young, you tend to look to others for guidance and to find out what’s right and wrong. And then there’s peer pressure. Guess what I’m saying is that the girl would do it right if she had a few more years under her belt. So please cut her some slack.

    1. She is young, but she’s also an adult. However, I did wonder (somewhere, in one of the posts I’ve written on the topic!) where her parents and pastor are on this. I don’t doubt that she believes she’s a Christian, or her faith, just wonder where that means “It’s ok to be in a beauty contest.”

  2. Hey MinTheGap .. sorry about the article grab, the editors are setting up the blog part of our news aggregation site and I guess this must have caught there eye 🙂 It’s not staying there, they really where just pulling content to set page features etc. So sorry about that. But now that I have seen your blog I will certainly put it in our Featured blogs 🙂
