Remember the Sabbath Day

praying for you Continuing on our theme of things God asked us to remember, I’d like to take a look at one of the things that we are told to remember right inside the Ten Commandments.

Exodus 20:8-11 – Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates: For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

This commandment is unique in many ways:

  • It’s the longest explanation given for any commandment.
  • It’s the only commandment not repeated/intensified in the New Testament.
  • It was one of the commandments that was actually placed into law as “blue laws” and even some places and some stores today practice not being open or having reduced hours.

What I find fascinating is the explanation.  God created the world in six days, and then rested as an example.  Was God tired?  Did He need the rest?

No, I think this was an example for us.  With many of the things that God has done and is doing, there are patterns and examples for us to follow.  God knows our frame– He knows that we are but dust.

Now, in this present day people rest a whole lot more than they used to.  Look at the traditional farmer– one that worked from the sun was up (sometimes before) until after the sun went down.  If that person were to just keep working through Saturday they would have been totally burnt out.

What are we supposed to remember?

That we need rest, and that God created the world.  It’s a reminder to us that God is the source of our life, and He loves us and wants us to follow Him.
