How big of a rock?

Yesterday I got to thinking about the age old question “Could God create a rock so big that He could not lift it?”  I think I’ve finally come up with an answer– yes.  There’s a caveat, though.  This could only happen if He chose to.

The reason that I come to this conclusion is that we were talking yesterday in church about God’s forgiveness and the fact that He promises to forget our sin– as far as the east from the west, buried in the depths of the deepest sea, blotted out.  If God can choose to forget something than certainly he could choose not to lift something, and therefore create a rock that He couldn’t lift.

  1. I understand the pitfall in that question.

I think the answer there would have to tie in with your view of predestination, election, etc.

One could say that God failed in His attempt to have a perfect human race when Adam sinned. Or they could say it was His plan to glorify His Son to allow Him to be the sacrifice for humanity.

Can God still be Soveriegn and fail– would He still be God? What do you think?

  2. I lean towards the idea that it’s God’s nature not to fail. More than a question of sovereignty above everything, the word ‘can’t’ doesn’t apply to God when put in terms of what infringe’s on his nature.
